From Cot to Bed: Adventures in Toddler Sleep Transitions!

Welcome, fellow parents, to the rollercoaster ride of transitioning your little one from a cosy cot to a big bed! In this light-hearted blog, I’ll share some tips and tricks that I've learnt as a sleep coach to make the transition as smooth as possible.

1. Farewell, Cot:

Bid farewell to the trusty cot that has been your toddler's sleep sanctuary for what feels like forever (optimum time to change to a bed is around 3 years). It's time to embrace the next chapter of bedtime adventures! But beware, your little explorer might see this as an opportunity to test their newfound freedom.

2. The Bed Selection:

Choosing the perfect bed for your toddler can be an adventure in itself. From race car beds to princess castles, the options are endless. Get your little one involved in the decision-making process, and watch their eyes light up with excitement as they imagine all the dreams they'll have in their new sleep haven.

3. Safety First:

Before your toddler takes their first leap into their big bed, ensure their safety. Install a bed guard or foam bed bumpers to prevent any unexpected midnight tumbles. And don't forget to childproof the room, because who knows what kind of mischief they'll get up to when they have the freedom to roam!

4. The Great Bedtime Adventure:

Now comes the fun part – introducing your toddler to their new sleep setup. Make it an adventure! Decorate their room with their favourite characters or create a magical bedtime routine that involves a special story or song. Let their imagination run wild as they embark on this new sleep journey.

5. The Midnight Shuffle:

Be prepared for some midnight shuffling as your toddler adjusts to their newfound freedom. You might find them wandering into your room, snuggling up next to you, or even falling asleep in the most unexpected places. Embrace the chaos and cherish these precious moments but make sure to return them to their bed each time this happens so they get used to their new sleep space.

6. Consistency is Key:

Remember, consistency is the secret ingredient to success. Stick to a consistent bedtime routine to help your toddler settle into their new sleep environment. Whether it's a warm bath, a favourite bedtime story, or a lullaby, these familiar rituals will provide comfort and signal that it's time to wind down.

7. Celebrate Milestones:

As your little one adjusts to their new bed, celebrate each milestone along the way. From the first night of uninterrupted sleep to waking up in their bed with a big smile, these small victories deserve a round of applause. Using a reward chart can be really beneficial here.

I hope this blog has helped you with this exciting milestone for your little one. Please get in touch if there is anything I can help you with to make this transition that bit easier for your family.
